I find it hard to believe the person who does the voice of Elmo would intentionally record a phrase like that, and that someone else working on the toy would then intentionally install it on random machines. More likely, it's a combination of the original phrase being truncated do to a glitch in the system and people hearing what they want to here. The difference between "Who wants to try" (the original phrase cut short) and "Who wants to die" is certainly small enough, especially for the people out there whose ears are fine-tuned enough to hear Satan when playing Beatles records backwards.
