Although some proponents of Prop 8 may use the "protect marriage" language,
the fact is that Prop 8 is merely about nomenclature, not substantive rights under state law. It's entirely about the LABEL to be applied by government to same-sex unions. Currently, courtesy of the SCOCA decision 4-3, it is "marriage," the will of the people be damned. If Prop 8 passes, same-sex couples still can get married (my term), but the government will LABEL that relationship as a "civil union."
