How far is too far when it comes too humour? My idea of too far is when something or someone is physically hurt.
But someone who gets offerned about a political or a religious joke or even a joke about three guys spending the night in a barn need to lighten up.
Anybody remember the First South Park Christmas episode? The towns folk kept bitching about the School play, trying to make it PC that they cut out everything and in the end the play sucked.
Speaking of wich here is a joke that won't offend anyone.
"A person and a person walk into a place. That's it."~ Drew Carrey.
And the above isn't funny...wich is what a joke is.
I hate Political Correctness PC needs to be renamed TP wich is short for Thought Police.
Yes this post was brought on what happened recently in GregX's latest post. Did he really think the Mexican Government should shoot people who wanted to cross the borders? Hell No. GregX has nothing against Mexicans, he has a problem with people who are here ILLEGALY.
I think people who hire migrant works should recieve a fine. Something that would make them have to pay a lot of money and that might change their tune.
Back in November of 2004 I joked that if I had a million dollars I'd load the people who whined they were going to leave America because Bush won onto a bus, drop them off in Mexico and load up the people who wanted to cross the border and take them to a buidling that would help make them legal citizens.
Ya know, I still want to do that. Load up all the anti-American Americans...that would mean most of the students at Berkley and dump them on the street once we cross the border.
Florida had it's share with illegals, although I have a lot more sympathy for Cuban refugees. Of course the rules was once they hit the sand people try to help them get their Green card.
GregX and I and several others are not rascist. If I found out there was a Latvian, Aussie, Danish person hwere illegaly we'd be pissed and call INS. *Points to Canada* That goes for the same to your folk up there, eh.
Anyone who thinks I'm rasist against Hispanics needs to remember this: I Would love nothing more for Jenny, my brother's girl friend, to be my sister. She's Dominican. I love Mara as a sister. My Uncle Mark is Hispanic. My Grandparents adopted him. He grew up in a house full of love and I love him as equally as I love my Uncle Hank. Both of them are the only uncles I have.
A Priest and a Rabbi went their neighborhood Fourth of July Picnic. Both were good friends yet the Priest like to joke about the Rabbi's Kosher habits.
The Priest walked up to the Rabbi and his beautiful wife while eating some maple sugar ham.
"Hmmm this is good ham. Mrs Doobiesnot has outdone herself this year."
"Mrs. Doobiesnot works hard to please everyone at the picnic," The Rabbi responed.
"We love her baked bread," The Rabbi's wife said.
"It's too bad you can't try some of her ham. It's so succulent and tender and sweet."
The Rabbi put an arm around his wife. "I think I will try some, on your wedding day."

Date: 2006-03-30 03:25 am (UTC)From:Okay you want to fine the migrant workers who come here? I'd rather they fine the people who HIRE migrant workers. Or rather the big businesses that provide a market that provide a draw for the illegal immigrants. Don't blame the illegal immigrants for something that is mostly the fault of the large corporations that hire them. If you want to solve a problem fix it at the root.

Date: 2006-03-30 03:41 am (UTC)From:The post you are defending was directed at Mexico's President. Not Latvia, not Australia, not Canada. Vicente Fox is Mexico's President and therefore, the post targeted Mexicans.
You may not find the humor offensive but then again, it wasn't directed at you or your ethnicity.
If everyone had really wanted to resolve the problem, then an apology would have gone a much longer way than a protracted defense of a tasteless joke.

Date: 2006-03-30 04:05 am (UTC)From:My mother is a Brazilian immigrant. She came here legally. My dumb, alcoholic cousin came here legally. My paternal ancestors came here on a boat through Ellis Island. Legally.
And, btw, I probably would have apologized if he hadn't played the race card. I am not, nor have I ever been a racist. Last I checked, illegal immigrants were not a race.
Unfortunatly, a good number of illegal immigrants happen to be Mexican. At least the ones currently making the news. But, honestly, why can't they just come legally? I'd welcome them with open arms.
Do you know what the Mexican government does to people who try to sneak in from their southern border? Jail and deportation if they're lucky.
ANd, just FYI, the individual in question has laughed or at least not objected to many other jokes of that nature I have made in the past... be it Scientologists, Jews, Catholics, Muslims, French people, Canadians... anyone. I make a (tasteless joke) about Mexicans, and now all of a sudden I'm in trouble?
Sounds like a nice double standard to me.
But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Date: 2006-03-30 04:48 am (UTC)From:I'm not going to get into a debate about immigration because my opinion is that the immigration laws are hypocritical bullshit. Half of my family came over when there were no immigration laws to worry about and the other half is NOT immigrants. They just got their land stolen and country taken away and were told to be happy about it so I really don't give a fig about who is a legal immigrant and who isn't.
But the bottom line is that by justifying a joke that had an adverse effect, there was a missed opportunity to learn something, both for you and for the person who was offended. Both of you could have handled the situation better. A simple, "Hey, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hit a nerve" would have gone a long way.

I understand wanting to come over and have a better life, but it should be done legally.
Truce?

Two words: Personal responsibility. I fully agree with the right of people to say whatever they want. However, there can and will be consequences. Freedom of speech does not equal freedom from responsibility, nor does it mean freedom from criticism (precisely the opposite, in fact). People who don’t suffer physical damage from others’ words need to lighten up? No. Just no. Not only does this ignore the fact that psychological injury can easily be worse than physical injury, it ignores the fact that words can hurt, and they can cause damage. Throughout human history, they’ve bruised feelings, started wars, and done everything in between. Jokes may be no big deal, but context is. And it can be very tricky to separate the two.
Immigration issue: Again, no. The standard, unqualified rants against illegal immigrants are dangerous oversimplifications of a very complex situation.
Racism: No, I don’t see any racism happening here either. I do see two other things, though. The first is prejudice, in the sense of the definitions given by my 1983 Webster’s Unabridged, the first of which is “a judgment or opinion formed before the facts are known; preconceived idea, favorable or, more usually, unfavorable.” The second, corollary one is the logical fallacy of “if one/some, then all.” Either one of these alone is problematic, but combined they exert a powerful detrimental force upon society -- and I hasten to add that they’re found everywhere in the political/social/economic spectra.
As for double standards, remember, we all have them. Rarely do they come to light unless and until one of our own oxen gets gored.
