As weird as this sounds, try adding a little milk (like a tablespoon). Recipes involving mostly powdered sugar are actually weird about what really thickens them. Adding a little milk, butter, or cream cheese will generally thicken, rather than thin frosting or frosting-like things.
Also, there's an awesome recipe on the Nestle cocoa container for frosting. It's not quite as thick as the stuff you get premade in the containers, but it's one of the thicker frostings I've seen.
That could be it. Margarine is quite a bit different from real butter (vegetable oils and such vs cream and salt). It often helps to toss the butter in the microwave for about 30 seconds on power level 3. It's just enough to soften it (though it does melt it a little bit). Make sure to watch it like a hawk and get it out as soon as you see it start to liquefy (you don't want it liquid going in).
